Halloween Makeup

boy putting on Halloween makeup><FONT face=Makeup do's and don'ts
Making your own makeup is fun and cheap, but beware of poisonous substances such as shoe polish, ink and paint. For safety's sake, stick to edible food dyes and colourings or food related ingredients.

Children are always touching their faces and putting their hands in their mouths so it may be a safer bet to give your child a costume that doesn't need makeup to finish it off. If you do want to put makeup on young children, use home made makeup instead of greasepaint or everyday cosmetics. You can find some recipes here.

Before you put liberal amounts of an unknown makeup on your face or hands, do a test first by applying a small amount to an area of skin and leave it for an hour. Wash it off, and if there is no reddened patch, itching or soreness it's pretty safe to assume you won't have an allergic reaction when you wear it for real.

If you are going to wear greasepaint or a heavy layer of normal cosmetics, it helps to dust the final product with a light layer of powder to stop it running in the heat.

Be careful not to get any makeup on your clothes as it can be very difficult to get off in the wash.

When you come to take off your makeup, use a good quality cold cream or makeup remover and try not to rub your skin. The colours can press into your pores and stay there for longer than you'd like!
